Box Score Canyon, Texas – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team fell 13-6 to Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament to close the 2016 season.
The Roadrunners fell behind early to the Lions allowing three runs in the top of the first inning with two outs. Texas A&M-Commerce added three more runs in the top of the second inning to make the score 6-0.
MSU Denver was able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning following sophomore
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.)'s leadoff double. Anderson advanced to third when sophomore
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) grounded out and then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.). The Roadrunners trailed 6-1 after two innings.
The score remained 6-1 until the top of the fifth inning when Texas A&M scored three runs to take a 9-1 advantage. MSU Denver responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs of their own. Fields reached on a single to right field and would eventually score on an error by the shortstop. Junior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) would drive in a run on a sacrifice fly. Junior
Liberty Nelson (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) scored the final run on the fifth inning on an error by the pitcher to make the score 9-4 in favor of Texas A&M-Commerce.
Texas A&M-Commerce put up four runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Roadrunners would be respond with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Smith drove in both runs when she doubled to left field.
The Roadrunners finish the season as Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Champions with an overall record of 35-19.
