The 1999-00 men's basketball team captured the first team national championship in any sport in Metro State history, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan 97-79 on March 25 in the final.  It was also the first national championship for any Colorado collegiate team (men or women) as the Roadrunners capped the season with a record of 33-4.  Metro State also captured the RMAC regular season and tournament titles.

Head coach Mike Dunlap was selected as the NABC National Coach of the Year and the RMAC Coach of the Year, while DeMarcos Anzures and Lee Barlow earned numerous All-America honors.  Anzures was a first team selection by the NABC, second team by Division II Bulletin and third team by Daktronics.  Barlow was named to the Division II Bulletin first team and was chosen as the RMAC Player of the Year.

Anzures carried the team in the championship game, scoring 32 points to be named Elite Eight MVP.  Metro State led by as much as 27 points in the second half and held a 50-30 halftime lead, though KWC cut the lead to 10 late in the game.  The Roadrunners shot 60.4 percent from the floor.

Metro State knocked off three nationally ranked teams in the NCAA Tournament, including No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan.

Along the way, the Roadrunners set numerous team records that stood at the time of the team's induction. Their 37 games played is a school record, as is the 33 wins and 19 home wins.  Other season records include field goal percentage (.515), free throws made (673) and free throw attempts (935).
