Baseball 1978-79
Assistant Baseball Coach 1980-90
Co-Head Baseball Coach 1991-92
Eric Larson knew how to hit a baseball. More importantly, however, was his ability to hit the books.
Larson was the Roadrunners' starting shortstop for two years in 1978 and 1979 after playing previously at the University of Colorado. A senior team captain for the Roadrunners, Larson was also dedicated to academics, and in 1979 was awarded two academic honors. He won the Duane Mehn Award for academic excellence and involvement in Human Performance Sport and Leisure Studies. Larson also captured the 1979 Colorado Scholars Award for Academic Excellence at Metro State.
Larson played a key role in Roadrunner baseball throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s. As a hitting coach in 1981, Metro State captured the NAIA national team batting championship with an impressive .384 average.
After 11 seasons (1980-90), Larson became co-head coach in 1991 and continued in that position through the 1992 season. The Roadrunners went 52-46 during his tenure. Interestingly, he also assisted men's basketball coach Bob Ligouri during the 1984-85 season, the Roadrunners' first men's hoops season after a six-year absense.
Larson was and is a true leader on and off the field. In 1992, he won the Denver Public Schools Teacher of the Year award, and most recently in 1999, was named Jefferson County Softball Coach of the Year.
