Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information 1985-94
Greg Smith served nine years as the assistant athletic director for sports information from 1985-86 through the 1993-94 school year. He began record keeping and archiving at Metro State, producing record books and media guides for each sport.
He joined the Roadrunners after a long previous career in the sports information and media relations field. Smith started out as a sports information intern at Bowling Green University and earned his bachelor's degree from Bowling Green in 1977 in public relations journalism. He was then hired as the SID and men's tennis coach at Valparaiso University and moved on to the SID position at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., in 1979. While at OU, he worked in the press box on game days for the Detroit Lions.
Smith joined the Detroit Pistons public relations and sales staff in 1981 and returned to the SID world in 1982 at Colorado State University-Pueblo (then-University of Southern Colorado). At CSUP, he also coached the men's and women's tennis teams and had a career head coaching record of 65-29-1 in tennis.
While at Metro State, in addition to his duties at the College, Smith worked for the Denver Broncos on game days and was a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America, United States Basketball Writers of America and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America. He won numerous awards for his publications.
