Men's Swimming & Diving 1982-84

Smith spent two years on the swimming and diving team at Metro State in 1982-83 and 1983-84 after transferring from the University of Oregon. A diver, he won the 1984 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship in the three-meter board with a score of 472.40.  He also was the runner-up in the one meter.

Smith was also the Intermountain Swim League Athlete of the Year in 1983 and won the ISL titles in the one and three meters.

He graduated with all of the school records in diving. Smith was known for a dive called the "spotter."  However, the dive is so dangerous, it was outlawed in competition. But Smith would always perform the dive before every meet.  Teammate Gus Lindemann would yell "spotter" and he would do a flip, land on the board again, yell "Go Metro" and go into a 2 1/2.

Smith re-enrolled at Metro State in 2002 and graduated in 2003 with a degree in behavioral science, with an emphasis in psychology and a minor in marketing.
