Volleyball Outlasts Adams State

The Metro State volleyball team came back to defeat Adams State in five sets, Thursday evening in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play at the Auraria Events Center. The 'Runners prevailed 25-11, 22-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-7.

"Again tonight we showed two different sides to this team," Head Coach Debbie Hendricks said. "At times we played confidently and dominated the match, but other times we played tentatively and let Adams State control the match. I have to give this team credit for battling through it and finding a way to win."

Amanda Cook led the offense with 18 kills and 10 digs, followed by freshman Julie Causseaux with 12 kills and five blocks. Sophomore Erin Keller added 10 kills and seven digs in her first starting role of the season.

MSCD continued the habit of starting the first set strong, jumping on the Grizzlies early. The 'Runners hit .324 in the first game compared to -.026 for Adams State.

The second set was tight early, but Adams capitalized on Metro State's errors to pull out to a 15-9 advantage. The 'Runners went on a 9-4 run to close the score to 19-18, but three consecutive hitting errors by MSCD gave the lead back to Adams State for good.

Adams State captured the third game in large part due to 14 errors from Metro State. The fourth set was tight early, as the two teams traded points. With the score tied at 19-19, Cook registered two consecutive kills followed by a kill from Causseaux to give the 'Runners a 22-19 advantage. Metro State closed out the set after a hitting error by the Grizzlies' Andrea Tuck.

In the fifth game, the 'Runners were able to capitilize on numerous errors from Adams State to close out the match. The Grizzlies hit -.200 in the set while the 'Runners hit .357.

Metro State improved to 9-7 overall and 7-2 in the RMAC. Adams falls to 8-8 overall and 5-4 in the RMAC. MSCD returns to the court tomorrow night when it hosts Western State at 7 p.m.
