The Metro State men's baketball team (5-2, 1-1 RMAC) lost a nail biter at Fort Lewis, 72-70, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play in Durango, Colo.
Fort Lewis held the lead the majority of the first half, until a layup by Jesse Wagstaff tied the game with 9:33 remaining. The teams would trade points for the remainder of the half, with the Skyhawks taking the 41-39 at intermission.
Fort Lewis continued to lead throughout most of the second half, until Wagstaff hit a three pointer to give the 'Runners the 63-60 advantage. The 'Runners built the lead to six points on two free throws from Donte Nicholas with just four minutes remaining. The Skyhawks responded with eight consecutive points to take the lead at 70-68. Daniel Bass answered with a jumper to tie the score at 70-70. The 'Runners had possession of the ball with 30 seconds remaining, but turned it over and Fort Lewis scored the final two points on a dunk with just six seconds on the clock.
Wagstaff led all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Marquise Carrington added 11 points.
MSCD returns home to face Mesa State Friday night at 7 p.m.
