Outside Hitters Lead 'Runners Past Mountain Lions

The Metro State volleyball team (6-5, 4-0 RMAC) ran its win streak to four matches with a sweep of CU-Colorado Springs, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play in Colorado Springs, Colo. The victory was the 'Runners first in Colorado Springs since 2003.

MSCD came out with a venegance in game one, racing to a 16-8 advantage. UCCS mounted a small comeback to close the score to 17-12, but the 'Runners were too much and took the first set 25-18.

The second set was back and forth with neither team holding a lead of more than two points. With the scored tied 21-21, Metro State pulled ahead with a kill from sophomore Lisa Jones and a service ace from Sarah Vallejos. A Mountain Lion kill closed the score to 23-22, but Jones came up with a block and a ball handling error from UCCS closed out the set.

The third set was a repeat of the second with the teams trading points and sideouts. UCCS held the advantage at 21-19, but again the 'Runners would come back. After a UCCS service error, freshman Bri Morley pounded a cross court kill and Vallejos dug a ball that flew over the net and landed in to give the 'Runners a 22-21 lead. Two blocks from Julie Causseaux gave MSCD match point at 24-23. Morley finished the match with her 13th kill of the night.

Junior outside hitter Amanda Cook had another strong outing with 13 kills, 10 digs and a .355 hitting percentage. Jones added nine kills and five blocks.

Metro State puts its perfect conference record on the line, Tuesday when they host crosstown rival Regis at 7 p.m.
