Metro State Downs Thunderwolves

DENVER, Colo. - Daniel Bass led four Roadrunners in double figures with 19 points as Metro State moved past Colorado State-Pueblo, 79-69, at the Auraria Event Center. Bass connected on 7-of-10 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws, while collecting seven rebounds in a victory highlighted by the spirited debut of the Roadrunner Pride Pep Band.

Metro State jumped out 4-0 early on a pair of Donte Nicholas layups, but the Thunderwolves responded with a 15-2 run to take a 15-6 lead just over five minutes into the game. The Roadrunners then rattled off a 12-2 run to take a one-point lead at 18-17 midway through the first half, and pushed the lead to 42-35 at the break.

Jake Trahern opened the second half with seven quick points, while Marc Williams added a pair of three-pointers to give the Thunderwolves a 48-46 lead at the 16:01 mark. Roman Van Allen's trey with 12:32 to play gave CSU-Pueblo its largest lead of the second half at 58-52 before Bass and Jesse Wagstaff teamed up for 12 of the next 16 Roadrunner points to give Metro State a 66-60 advantage. Metro State pushed its lead to 10 for the final margin to improve to 5-1 in RMAC play, 11-3 overall.

Jake Trahern registered game-highs for points (20) and rebounds (10) to lead the Thunderwolves, who fell to 3-3 in conference play and 6-8 overall.

Wagstaff finished the game with 18 points, while Chris Robinson (Irvine, Calif./Jserra H.S.) had 16 points and Nicholas added 12.

The 18-member Roadrunner Pride Pep Band, under the direction of Dr. F. David Romines, will be featured at several Metro State basketball games this season.

Metro State faces New Mexico Highlands Saturday, Jan.17 at 7 p.m.
