DENVER, Colo. - Marquise Carrington scored a game-high 19 points to lead Metro State past New Mexico Highlands, 87-57, at the Auraria Event Center. Carrington connected on 6-of-9 field goals, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
The Cowboys hit a three-pointer on their first possession to take an early lead, but the Roadrunners rattled off 11 straight points sparked by Jesse Wagstaff (Canberra, Australia/Radford College)'s layup and three-pointer, and free throws by Brian Minor, Chris Robinson (Irvine, Calif./Jserra H.S.), and Daniel Bass. New Mexico Highlands rallied to knot the game 24-24 with 7:01 to play in the first half, but Metro State responded with a 13-1 run to regain control and headed to the locker room with a 49-39 lead.
The second half was all Metro State as the Cowboys were held to just four points over nearly 10 minutes, while the Roadrunners built a 71-43 advantage, capped by Carrington's trifecta with 10:46 to play. Twelve Roadrunners logged playing time with nine registering points. Wagstaff and Minor each scored 13 points, followed by Bass with 12. Lawrence Billings posted a game-high 12 rebounds for Metro State.
Roman Andrade tallied 13 points game to lead the Cowboys, who fell to 5-2 in conference play and 11-4 overall.
Metro State improved to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners face Regis at home Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
