Metro State Races to Win Over Regis

DENVER, Colo. - Jesse Wagstaff led five Roadrunners in double figures with a game-high 23 points to lead Metro State past Regis, 86-72, at the Auraria Event Center. Wagstaff, who has scored double figures in 12 straight games, connected on 5-of-10 field goals and 12-of-14 free throws.

The Rangers took an early 4-2 lead, but the Roadrunners responded with a 14-0 run to take a 16-4 advantage just five minutes into the game. The Rangers climbed back to within one at 21-20 after Andy Pokorny hit a jumper, but Metro State stretched the lead to 43-30 at intermission.

Lawrence Billings (Visalia, Calif./Redwood H.S.)' layup at the 15:48 mark of the second half gave the Roadrunners their largest lead of the game at 53-36, and the Rangers would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way. Billings finished the game with 11 points off the bench, while Donte Nicholas and Brian Minor each chipped in 11 points as well. Marquise Carrington added 13 points.

As a team, Metro State attempted a season-high 47 shots from the charity stripe, making 37. Nine of eleven Roadrunners who saw action vs. the Rangers made at least one free throw on the night.

Pokorny scored 14 points to lead the Rangers, who fell to 2-6 in conference play and 5-11 overall.

The Roadrunners, 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the RMAC, host the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. Metro State then travels for four RMAC contests before returning home Feb. 6.
