DENVER, Colo. - Donte Nicholas led six Roadrunners in double figures with 18 points as Metro State moved past UCCS, 92-81, at the Auraria Event Center.
Nicholas fueled an 18-4 run early in the game, capped by his layup and free throw at the 10:35 mark of the first half. He added another layup to push the Roadrunner lead to 37-17 with just over three minutes to play before intermission. Brian Minor and Daniel Bass added layups to give Metro State its largest lead of the game at 42-17 before heading to the locker room with a 20-point cushion, 44-24.
The Mountain Lions closed the gap with a quick 8-0 run to start the second half and eventually pulled to within four, 77-73, after Nick Weaver sank a pair of free throws with 5:22 to play. The Roadrunners hit 11-of-11 free throws over the final five minutes to seal the victory, hitting 83.3 percent from the charity stripe for the game. As a team, Metro State outscored UCCS 42-26 in the paint as eight different Roadrunners tallied layups in the contest.
Marquise Carrington posted 16 points for Metro State, followed by Brian Minor with 14, Jesse Wagstaff with 11 and Chris Robinson and Lawrence Billings with 10 apiece.
Weaver scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Mountain Lions, who fell to 4-4 in conference play and 4-12 overall.
The Roadrunners, 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the RMAC, travel to Colorado Christian Friday, Jan. 30, followed by a road game at Colorado Mines Saturday, Jan. 31. Metro State returns home Feb. 6 to face Chadron State at 5 p.m.
