GOLDEN, Colo. - Donte Nicholas posted a season-high 16 points for Metro State in a 71-65 setback to Westminster (Utah) at Lockridge Arena on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Roadrunners and lifted Westminster to 14-1 on the year.
The Roadrunners trailed 40-35 at the break and fell behind by 13 midway through the second half. Metro State closed the gap to 58-56 on Marquise Carrington (Philadelphia, Pa./Bartram H.S.)'s layup with 3:24 to play, but Westminster responded with an 8-0 run to push the lead back to 10 with just over a minute in the contest. The Griffins converted 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Jesse Wagstaff finished the game with 15 points for the Roadrunners, marking the seventh straight double-figure scoring effort for the senior.
Metro State travels to Western New Mexico Jan. 8 for RMAC play and returns to the Auraria Events Center Jan. 16 for a four-game home stand beginning with a matchup vs. Colorado State-Pueblo.
