Metro State Completes Road Sweep

GOLDEN, Colo. - Jesse Wagstaff tallied 13 points to lead the Roadrunners past Colorado School of Mines, 54-49. Marquise Carrington chipped in 12 points and Daniel Bass recorded 10 points off the bench to pace Metro State.

The Roadrunners controlled the first half, building a lead as large as 10 points, 32-22, before heading to the locker room with a 33-27 advantage.

Kyle Pape triggered a 9-2 run to open the second half for Colorado Mines after hitting a three-pointer and a jumper to give the Orediggers a 36-35 lead.

The teams played even most of the second half. A Lawrence Billings steal led to a Carrington jumper for a three-point Metro State advantage, 43-40, with 5:21 remaining. Billings followed with a dunk on the next Metro State possession to build a 45-40 lead, but the Orediggers rallied with layups on their next two trips up the floor to make it a one-point game with 2:15 on the clock.

Donte Nicholas hit a timely three-pointer, the only trifecta of the half for Metro State, to give the Roadrunners a 48-44 lead with just under two minutes to play. The Orediggers pulled to within 48-45, but Nelson Ekeh picked up a critical rebound after a missed Colorado Mines free throw and was rewarded with a dunk on the other end to push the Metro State lead back to five, 50-45. Wagstaff and Carrington combined to go 4-of-4 from the free throw line to ice the win.

Pape finished with 13 points for the Orediggers, who fell to 10-9 overall and 5-6 in conference play.

Metro State improved to 16-3 overall and 10-1 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners begin a four-game home stand vs. Chadron State Feb. 6. The final regular season home games wrap up Feb. 13-14 vs. Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian, respectively. The rematch vs. the Orediggers marks Fan Appreciation Day and will be televised live by CBS CollegeSports and Altitude2 at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14.
