Another Strong Defensive Effort Leads to Rout of Johnson & Wales

The No. 12 Metro State men's basketball team built a 25-point halftime lead and held on for an 82-57 victory over Johnson & Wales at the Auraria Event Center on Sunday evening.  The Roadrunners are now 2-0 to start the season, while JWU fell to 3-4.

Metro State held the Wildcats to just 26.1 (6-for-23) shooting in the first half, outrebounded JWU 22-14 and forced 13 turnovers to build a 46-21 lead at the break.

For the game Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) led both teams with a career-high 18 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field with five rebounds and two assists.  Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) and Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) each poured in 17 points.  Minor filled up the stat sheet with five rebounds, five steals, four assists and a blocked shot.  Nicholas had three assists, two steals, two rebounds and one block.

Freshman Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) scored 13 points and had five rebounds, hitting 4-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line.  Glenn Miller (Sacramento, Calif./Foothill H.S.) rounded out the Roadrunners in double figures with 11 points.

Ethan Fisher led JWU with 16 points, hitting 3-for-6 from the outside.

Nicholas carried the team early, helping Metro State build a 16-7 lead with a 3-pointer with just under 15 minutes left in the first half, as he scored eight points during that stretch.  Metro State then went on a 16-2 run over a six-minute span to take a 32-12 lead.

A layup by Tommy Earl (Casper, Wyo./Natrona County H.S.) with just under a minute left stretched the Metro State lead to 27 points at 46-19, its biggest lead of the first half.

A 7-0 run by the Wildcats with 5:30 remaining in the game cut Metro State's lead to 20 at 74-54, but that was as close as JWU would get after the 6-minute mark in the first half.  A Miller layup with 37 seconds remaining in the second half gave Metro State a 28-point lead at 82-54, its biggest lead of the night.

For the game, Metro State forced 23 turnovers that led to 28 points and shot 50.8 (31-for-61) percent from the field, including 40.0 (6-for-15) percent from the outside.  The Roadrunners committed just 15 turnovers in the game and held JWU to just 34.7 (17-for-49) percent shooting.

Metro State will travel to Grand Junction for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday at the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic.  The Roadrunners will face Colorado State-Pueblo at 5 p.m. on Friday, before wrapping up tournament play on Saturday against Mesa State at 7 p.m.  Both games will be counted as non-conference games.
