DENVER, Colo. - Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) scored a game-high 36 points to lead Metro State past Colorado Christian, 76-64, at the Auraria Event Center on Saturday.
Nicholas came just four points short of the school record, set by
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) on Jan. 15 against Western New Mexico with 40 points. Evans broke the previous record of 38.
On Saturday, Nicholas was nearly flawless, hitting 11-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-4 from the outside, and 10-of-12 at the line. He added nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.
The Roadrunners held a 42-27 halftime advantage, but the Cougars climbed back to take a 55-53 lead with 8:56 to play. Metro State responded with a 20-5 run to regain control.
Jobi Wall led the Cougars with 15 points.
Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) chipped in 15 points for the Roadrunners, while
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) added 11 points. Metro State improved to 16-3 overall and 9-2 in conference play, while Colorado Christian slipped to 7-11 overall and 5-6 in the RMAC.
Metro State starts a four-game road swing, beginning with a stop at Nebraska-Kearney Thursday, Feb. 4. The Roadrunners return home Friday, Feb. 19 to face Chadron State.
