DENVER, Colo. - Metro State outscored UC-Colorado Springs 18-6 over the final eight minutes to win 59-47 on Friday in the final regular season game for both squads. The Roadrunners have earned the third
season in the East Division of next week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout with an overall record of 16-11 and 11-8 in the RMAC. They will travel to either Colorado Christian or Colorado Mines on Tuesday. UCCS ends its season at 6-21 overall and 2-17 in the RMAC.
Metro State scored the final six points of the first half to take a 30-26 lead into halftime as
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) made a jumper just seconds before the buzzer. After starting the second half on an 8-2 run, the Roadrunners allowed the Mountain Lions back into the game as UCCS went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 38-38 with 12:55 left to play.
Trailing by one, Metro State scored eight straight points to take control at 48-41 with 5:21 left in the game. The Roadrunners built a 14-point lead in the final minute to seal the victory.
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored 14 points to lead the Roadrunners. Seniors
Leandra Sands (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Wilson H.S.) and
Chelsea Williamson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) joined
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and
Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) with eight points each.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) also had 10 rebounds and four assists.
Sands hit both of her 3-point attempts and also went 2-for-2 at the line and Williamson added three assists as the pair played their final game at home.
Colorado Christian holds a 1-game lead over Colorado Mines entering Saturday. If CCU wins at Nebraska-Kearney, the Roadrunners will head to Mines on Tuesday. If the Orediggers win at CCU loses tomorrow, Metro State will go to Colorado Christian.
