Men's soccer shocks top-ranked Fort Lewis behind PK goal

Box Score Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. -
No. 18 Metro State upset No. 1 Fort Lewis 1-0 on Friday behind a second-half penalty kick goal by freshman Josh Buysse (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.), his first career goal.  Metro State improved to 8-5-1 overall and 6-4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Skyhawks suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 13-1-0 and 9-1-0.

It was Metro State's second win over a No. 1-ranked team in school history.  The Roadrunners defeated Fort Lewis 5-3 at home on Sept. 7, 2007, for their only other win against a top-ranked opponent.

It was a game of firsts for two Roadrunners as Buysse scored his first careeer goal and goalkeeper Shailer Thomas (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) made a career-high seven saves for his first career shutout.  It was also Metro State's first win over the Skyhawks in Durango since 2007.

In a very physical game that saw seven cautions handed out, including a red card to Fort Lewis' Thomas Hoang late in the game, the Roadrunners outplayed FLC, holding an 18-15 shot advantage.

Metro State was stopped five times in the first half by FLC goalkeeper Ryan Wirth.

At 45:50, a foul in the box led to a penalty kick for the Roadrunners and Buysse converted for the game's only goal.

Thomas made five saves over the final 30 minutes to secure the shutout.

Head coach Ken Parsons earned his 100th career victory with the win, becoming the second coach in school history to reach that mark.

Metro State will host UC-Colorado Springs at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
