Men's soccer eliminated by Fort Lewis at NCAA Tournament

DURANGO, Colo. – No. 19 Metro State fell 3-0 at No. 3 Fort Lewis on Thursday afternoon in Durango, Colo., in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Skyhawks improved to 20-1-0 with the win and Metro State's season came to an end at 14-7-1.

The Skyhawks controlled play for much of the first half, though Metro State had several scoring chances. Michael Schellenbaum (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson H.S.) missed wide left on a wide open one-touch shot from the top of the box just six minutes in. Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) also had two shots from inside the box miss wide, including a header in the 44th minute.

Cory Dean put FLC on the board at 17:54 after a one-touch pass by Thomas Hoang off Alberto Capdepon-Rodriguez's cross.  With five minutes left in the half, Kosta Kordistos missed just wide right on an open net with a touch shot from near the left post, catching Shailer Thomas (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) out of the net. Thomas made two saves in the first half.

The second half started much better for the Roadrunners, but their strong play for the first 10 minutes, but Hoang got loose on a breakaway and pushed the deficit to 2-0 in the 57th minute.  Eight minutes later, Joey Madigan put the game out of reach with a goal off a 25-yard free kick.

Despite FLC controlling possession for much of the game, Metro State outshot the Skyhawks 17-9.  Skyhawks goalkeeper Ryan Wirth made three saves.

Metro State will say goodbye to four seniors, including Scott Crawford (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.), Dele Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.), Chris Yoder (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite H.S.) and Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.).
