Freshman's double-double helps men's hoops to season-opening win

Freshman Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and senior Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) had 17 points and 10 rebounds as No. 10 Metro State opened the season with a 71-60 win over Bemidji State (Minn.) at home.

Kay had 10 points and six rebounds in the second half and Evans carried the team in the first half with 15 points and six boards.

Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.)'s team-high 20 points and nine rebounds were also key, as he had 14 in the second half and shot 9-of-15 for the game.

Junior college transfer Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) had 13 points in his first game, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the line.

Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) provided seven points.

Metro State scored 26 points off 18 turnovers, while comitting just seven. The Roadrunners shot 42.6 percent, while BSU hit at 47.6 percent.

Metro State exploded to a 20-7 lead seven minutes in after trailing 5-3 early.  The Roadrunners stretched the lead out to 15 with under two minutes left in the half, before the Beavers scored the final five points for a 39-29 Metro State halftime lead.

BSU never got closer than six points in the second half.

Metro State will host Winona State (Minn.) at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
