DENVER – Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) scored a career-high 30 points as No. 10 Metro State defeated Black Hills State (S.D.) 69-51 on Saturday night at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 4-0 this season, while BHSU fell to 0-2.
Jefferson hit 9-of-13 from the floor, including four 3-pointers, and made 8-of-10 at the line. He also added five rebounds. Jefferson entered the game in a shooting slump, shooting just 25 percent in the first three games this season.
It was the first 30-point performance for a Metro State player since
Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) scored 36 on Jan. 30, 2010, against Colorado Christian.
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) added 13 points off the bench and a team-high four assists.
Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports High) hit three 3-pointers and scored 11.
Tyler Cooper (Huntington Beach, Calif./Christian Heritage H.S.) and
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) each had a game-high eight rebounds as Metro State held a 41-26 rebounding advantage.
The Roadrunners shot 47.8 percent from the floor, while holding the Yellow Jackets to just 30.4 percent.
The Yellow Jackets came out hot, taking a 7-2 lead four-and-a-half minutes into the game.
Metro State answered with a 17-1 run over the next five minutes to lead 19-8 as Miller scored six points in the game's first 10 minutes. The Roadrunners went into halftime with a 32-24 lead behind 15 from Jefferson.
An 18-6 run in the middle of the second half helped Metro State build its largest lead of the game at 64-43 with 2:25 left, sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers by Brotherson and Jefferson with eight minutes to play.
Freshman
Sam Porter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) buried a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left for his first career points, giving the Roadrunners a 69-50 lead.
Brody Brisk led BHSU with 17 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor. Rob Johnson added 11.
Metro State will host Colorado College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
