CANYON, Texas - No. 5 Metro State used a 19-8 run to close the first half to win 68-55 against Angelo State (Texas) on Saturday at the Roberts Ditching Lady Buff Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon, Texas. The Roadrunners improved to 4-0 this season, while ASU fell to 1-4 overall.
Trailing 19-18 with 6:57 left in the first half, the Roadrunners outscored the Rambelles 19-8 the rest of the half to lead 37-27 at the break.
Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) scored nine points during the run.
Metro State led by as many as 17 points in the second half and maintained a double-digit lead rest of the game.
Burke and
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) each scored a game-high 15 points. Burke was 6-of-10 from the floor with five rebounds. Wood buried all three of her 3-point attempts and had four assists. The two players combined to go 7-of-7 at the free throw line.
Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) recorded her first double-double as a Roadrunner with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) provided eight points and
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) each had six.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) also had seven rebounds and three steals.
The Roadrunners hit 5-of-9 from the outside and held a 47-31 rebounding advantage.
Metro State will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Friday at home against New Mexico Highlands at 5 p.m.
