Evans and Morse's double-doubles power No. 1 Metro State to win

Box Score DENVER - Top-ranked Metro State used a 25-5 run late in the first half through the early second to top Western State 79-64 on Saturday evening at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 12-0 overall and 7-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Mountaineers slipped to 4-8 and 1-7.

Metro State outrebounded WSC 50-31 and had three players reach double digits in rebounding. Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) (22 points, 13 rebounds) and Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) (20 points, 10 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles and Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports High) also had 11 boards.

Morse shot 8-of-15 from the floor and 6-of-8 at the line and Evans connected on 8-of-16 and 4-of-6 with two assists and a steal. Brotherson chipped in with seven points.

Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) reached double figures in scoring with 10 points.

Metro State outscored WSC 19-5 over the final 8:03 of the first half to take a 38-27 lead into the intermission, shooting 8-for-13 (.615) during the run. Morse led all scorers with 16 points, the most first-half points for a Metro player this season.

The Roadrunners opened the second half with the first six points to stretch the run to 25-5 before the Mountaineers finally got another basket.

Metro pushed its lead to 22 points at 55-33 with 12:08 left after four straight free throws by Miller. An 11-2 run cut the Roadrunner lead to 11 points at 60-49 with 6:15 to go, but the Mountaineers never got closer than 11 points.

A tough Metro defense held WSC to 39.7 percent shooting.

Alex Hart hit 5-of-6 from the outside and scored a game-high 26 points for the Mountaineers. Weylan Towns added 17 off the bench.

Metro State will play at No. 12 Colorado Mines at 8 p.m. on Friday.
