DENVER -
Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) scored 3:44 into the first overtime as Metro State upset No. 11 Colorado Mines 2-1 on Sunday at home.  It was the second win over a top-25 team in the past week for the Roadrunners, who improved to 6-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  CSM fell to 6-2-0 and 4-1-0.

The win for the Roadrunners snapped a six-game winless streak against the Orediggers.  The last win came in 2008.

Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) dribbled deep towards the endline near the right post and fired a cross to Herschberger who one-touched the ball into the net for the winner.

Metro State had a 1-0 lead at 32:04 when T.J. Thiebaut (Pueblo, Colo./South H.S.) scored his first career goal, flicking a shot over the Mines goalkeeper after taking a pass in the center of the box from Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.).

The Roadrunners controlled possession for most of the game, but the Orediggers took control the last 20 minutes of regulation as Metro State went into prevent mode.  A shot by Philip Wilson nearly tied the game in the 73rd minute when his shot from just outside of the right post hit the crossbar.

CSM had two point-blank chances in the 80th minute, but goalkeeper Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) came up with two spectacular saves in succession to keep the Roadrunners in front.  He made two more saves over the next two minutes.

The Orediggers drew a foul near the Metro State bench in the 89th minute, setting up a free kick by Alex Nass. His serve into the box found Sean Helster's head for the equalizer at 88:42.

It was the third time in the past three years Colorado Mines had scored either a game-winning or game-tying goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation against Metro State.  On Nov. 3, 2009, it was a header by Nass off a corner kick that gave CSM a 2-1 victory with 22 seconds remaining in the game.

This time, Metro State had an answer in overtime.  The Roadrunners regained control of the game and held possession for nearly the entire period before the winner.

CSM had a corner kick 34 seconds before the final goal.  Metro State regained possession after the corner and Grode worked the ball up the left sideline.  He crossed it back to Hughes, who dribbled down to the right post to set up Herschberger for the goal.

It was Herschberger's second game-winner this season and fourth of his career, first in overtime.

Bissau made a season-high nine saves for the win.  The Roadrunners outshot Mines 24-20, including 12-10 in shots on goal.

Metro State will play at Adams State at 3 p.m. on Friday.
