Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS - No. 7 Metro State held off a late run to win 55-48 at UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday evening in Colorado Springs. The Roadrunners improved to 14-1 overall and 10-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS fell to 10-7 and 5-6.
The Roadrunners pushed their lead out to 14 points early in the second half, but a late 5-0 run cut the lead to 49-47 with 1:58 left.
Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) scored four points in the final two minutes, including a pair of free throws, to help seal the win.
Dow finished with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double, shooting 7-of-14 from the floor.
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) also scored 10 points, all in the first half.
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) had eight points, six assists, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) added seven rebounds, six points, a steal and a block.
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) had six points as well.
The Roadrunners started slow in the first half, falling behind 15-6 just seven minutes into the contest. But back-to-back 3-pointers by Benson and Dow helped an 8-0 run and Metro took its first lead at 21-19 with 4:24 left on a layup by Benson. The comeback was sparked by some strong defense as Metro forced consecutive shot clock violations at one point.
The Roadrunners finished the first half on a 10-2 run in the final three minutes to lead 31-23 at half, shooting 4-for-4 from the floor during that time. Dow and Benson carried the offense in the first half with 11 and 10 points, respectively, on a combined 8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-5 from the outside.
For the second straight night, Metro held its opponent under 35 percent shooting as the Mountain Lions connected at just 34.0 percent. The Roadrunners also outrebounded UCCS 44-27.
Metro State will host No. 4 Fort Lewis at 5 p.m. on Friday in what will likely be a battle of two top-5 teams after two teams ahead of the Roadrunners lost this weekend.
