Box Score DENVER - Metro State defeated Fort Lewis 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon to advance to the RMAC semifinal against Colorado Mines. MSU improved to 12-6-1 overall, while FLC's season came to an end at 9-8-2.
The Roadrunners fell down early to the Skyhawks 2-0 in the first six minutes of the game. Yannis Becker scored his seventh goal of the season for the Skyhawks in the fifth minute when he put the shot past Roadrunner goalie
Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.). Andy Hoffman assisted on the scoring play for the Skyhawks.
Less than two minutes later Derek Freeman scored a header from inside the box off the corner kick from Becker. The Skyhawks held the 2-0 advantage over the Roadrunners through halftime.
Coming out of halftime, the Roadrunners increased their intensity and were able to capitalize in the 46th minute when
Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) shot the ball on an open net after Skyhawks' goalie Ryan Schaul made a diving save on
Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.)' shot. The goal was Herschberger's 11th goal of the year.
Andy Lopez (Phoenix/La Joya H.S.) and Hughes assisted on the scoring play after Lopez sent a long crossing pass to Hughes on the right side of the net.
Less than four minutes later, Herschberger scored his 12th goal of the season when he shot the ball from the top right corner of the box under a charging goalie's arms.
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) and Hughes assisted on the play. It was Herschberger's third career multi-goal game.
Pierce Galan (Phoenix/Seton Catholic H.S.) scored his first career goal in the 72nd minute when he shot the ball from the top of the box off a cross from Arrubla.
Metro State outshot Fort Lewis 18-13 in the game.
It was the first time since Sept. 7, 2007 that MSU won after trailing 2-0 in a game. The Roadrunners rallied to win 5-3 over Fort Lewis in that game.
Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) had two saves on the day and the victory increased his record to 5-0-1 on the season.
