Men's basketball: Tenacious defense leads Metro State to win in RMAC opener

Box Score DENVER - No. 3 Metro State defeated Regis University 88-65 on Saturday night in the opening game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for both teams.  The win increased the Roadrunners to 5-0 on the season while the loss dropped the Rangers to 1-3 on the season. 

Metro State was led by Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) and his 22 points and 11 rebounds and Morse had his third double-double of the season.  Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) also helped in the scoring affair for the Roadrunners as he pitched in 20 points.  Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) added 16 and Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) had 12.

The Roadrunners started the game off strong as they were up 20-10 at the 11:36 mark in the first half. 

The high pressure defense of the Roadrunners forced 18 turnovers which led to easy buckets as they shot 62.5 percent in the first half.  A 20-4 run midway through the first half helped Metro State to a 48-28 halftime lead.  Jefferson had 13 of his 20 points in the first half and Miller had 11 of his 16 also in the first half. 

The Roadrunners came out strong again in the second half as they were able to maintain their lead with pressure defense as Jefferson forced five steals along with three each from Kay and Miller. 

Morse was also able to help maintain the lead for the Roadrunners as he scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half.  The Roadrunners led by at least 20 points the entirety of the second half as they gained their first victory in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. 

For the game the Roadrunners shot 57.8 percent from the field including going 4-for-9 from behind the arc. 

Regis was led by Jon Conley and his 13 points.  Demitrius Owens led the way on the boards for the Rangers with nine rebounds. 

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Colorado Springs to face UC-Colorado Springs on Friday night.
