Women's basketball: Wood's career high leads MSU to 20-point win at home

Box Score DENVER - Metro State never trailed Saturday night as it defeated Black Hills State 62-42.  The win improved the Roadrunners record to 4-3 overall and dropped the Yellow Jackets to 2-7 on the season. 

The Roadrunners were led behind a career-high 22 points from Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) and 12 points from Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.). Tai Jenson pulled down eight rebounds and scored eight points off the bench for the Roadrunners.

Metro State came out strong in the first half with a 16-0 to begin the game with 13 minutes left in the half.  The Roadrunners also forced seven turnovers by the Yellow Jackets also during the first seven minutes. 

Overall in the first half, the Roadrunners forced 16 turnovers, eight of which were steals helping them to a 30-14 halftime advantage.  Also in the first half, the Roadrunners held a 22-6 advantage in scoring in the paint. 

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets fought back to within seven points with 4:34 left in the second half.  However the comeback attempt from the Yellow Jackets came up short as the Roadrunners were able to close the game on a 13-0 run to make the final score 62-42.

The 42 points allowed were a season low for points allowed for the Roadrunners.  Wood's 22 points were also a season high for the Roadrunners.  Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) had a career-high seven assists and to lead the way for Metro State.  DeGarmo also had a career high with six steals which was also a team individual season high. 

The Yellow Jackets were led by Logan Cowan's 12 points.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Sunday when they host Chadron State at 3 p.m.
