Men's basketball: Strong first half leads MSU to win at CSU-Pueblo

Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. - No. 3 Metro State used another big night from Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) to win 88-68 at Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday night. The Roadrunners improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSUP fell to 2-8 and 1-3.

Miller scored 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting and dished out two assists one night after scoring a career-high 31 points at UC-Colorado Springs.

Miller was supported by three others in double figures in scoring. Australian sophomores Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) and Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) each poured in 17 and Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) had 11. Kay was 7-of-11 from the floor and McCarron was 6-of-10. Jefferson added five assists and had three steals. Kay also had three steals and McCarron had five assists.

Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) reached double digits in rebounds for the fourth time this season with 10, but scored just six points after a physical game in the paint. He also had three blocked shots and two steals.

MSU won the turnover battle 9-to-17 and outrebounded CSUP 36-34. The Roadrunners also shot 49.3 percent and held the ThunderWolves to 41.2 percent.

Metro State closed the first half on a 31-8 run over the final nine minutes to lead 49-26 at the break. McCarron buried three 3-pointers and hit 5-of-6 from the floor for 15 first-half points. Miller added 12 and Jefferson had 11 at half after MSU shot 58.8 percent and forced 11 turnovers.

CSUP came out strong in the second half and actually outscored the Roadrunners 42-39 in the half. The ThunderWolves got as close as 11 points, but Kay kept MSU comfortably in front with 12 points after halftime.

Metro State will return home to host Black Hills State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
