Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) added 20 as No. 18 Metro State pounded Western New Mexico 90-65 on the road on Friday. The Roadrunners improved to 20-5 overall and 15-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Mustangs fell to 8-16 and 8-12 with their fifth straight loss.
Metro State has now reached 20 wins in 14 of the past 15 seasons.
Evans shot 9-of-18 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds. Jefferson hit 8-of-9 at the free throw line and had four rebounds and four steals.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) added 17 points and tied a career high with 16 rebounds. It was his 14th double-double of the season. He ranks fifth in Division II in double-doubles.
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) chipped in with 14 points.
The Roadrunners outrebounded WNMU 51-26 and scored 31 points off 18 Mustang turnovers. Metro also had 26 second-chance points off a season-high 26 offensive rebounds.
Metro jumped out to a 14-2 lead just five minutes into the game, scoring on seven of its first eight possessions. The Roadrunners then took a 46-30 lead into hafltime. Evans had 16 points in the first half and Morse already had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
A 19-6 run midway through the second half pushed the lead to 84-56 with 4:27 left, the largest lead of the game.
Mustangs guard T.J. Riley matched Evans with for the game's high scorer with 21 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor and 9-of-13 at the line. Chad Carter added 19 for WNMU.
Metro State will play at New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at 8 p.m.
