Cervantes leads women's basketball back to regional championship game

Box Score WAYNE, Neb. - 10th-ranked and No. 2-seeded Metro State topped No. 12 Fort Lewis 60-42 on Saturday evening in Wayne, Neb., to advance to the NCAA Central Region championship for the second season in a row. The Roadrunners improved to 27-3 overall this season, while FLC's season came to an end at 26-5.

Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) scored a game-high 18 points and had eight rebounds and four assists. She hit 6-of-10 from the floor and 6-of-8 at the line.

Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored 10 points and had nine rebounds, making 5-of-6 from the floor. Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) added nine points, Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) had seven and Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) each scored six.

The Roadrunners held FLC to just 30.4 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers.

Metro used a 10-2 run early in the first half to build a 16-9 lead just eight minutes into the game. The Roadrunners carried a 31-23 lead into halftime after shooting 52 percent from the floor.

The Skyhawks cut the lead to 41-36 with 8:48. Cervantes then hit two baskets on a 6-0 run to stretch the lead to 11 and Metro built its lead to 17 points with 1:46 left.

Katerina Garcia led FLC with 12 points, including 3-of-5 from the outside.

The Roadrunners will face the winner of No. 1 Wayne State (Neb.) and No. 20 Augustana (S.D.).
