Volleyball: Offensive efficiency pulls Roadrunners to sweep for second day in a row

Box Score DENVER - For the second straight day No. 9 Metro State swept its opponent, and this time in dominating fashion going 25-15, 25-12, 25-10 to win its second RMAC match of the season over Black Hills State. The Roadrunners jumped to 7-3 on the season and the Yellow Jackets dropped to 4-6.

The Roadrunners cruised to victory in the first set thanks to six kills by both Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) and Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.).

The second set was more of the same for the Roadrunners. After falling behind 11-10, the Roadrunners went on to score 15 of the next 18 points for the second set victory.

The third set was a struggle for the Roadrunners in terms of their .182 hitting percentage. However the Yellow Jackets were unable to capitalize by posting a .143 hitting percentage of their own. The match was eventually punctuated by a victory sealing block from Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.).

The match was dominated by Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) and Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) as they combined for 25 kills and a combined hitting percentage of .380.

For the second straight night Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) served up over 20 assists and helped her team hit a season high .340 hitting percentage. The Roadrunners hit .422 in the two sets Gemignani played.

Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) and Quijano both had a career high in blocks with seven and six blocks respectively. They helped Metro to a season high 13 total blocks as team.

Defensively Wong had 11 digs to lead the team. She also had huge defensive help from Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) who chipped in with 10 digs of her own.

Metro State will face No. 17 Colorado Mines in Golden next Friday at 7 p.m.
