Women's soccer: Roadrunners earn second shutout of the season

Box Score DENVER - Metro State scored twice in the first half and went on to a 3-0 win over Colorado State-Pueblo on Sunday in Denver at Auraria Field in women's soccer. The second shutout this season for the Roadrunners improved them to 5-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSUP fell to 1-5-1 and 1-3-0.

MSU attempted a season-high 32 shots, led by Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) and Tess Hagenlock (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.) recording career highs with 10 and eight each, respectively.

Brandi Farley (Colorado Springs/Pine Creek H.S.) scored early for the Roadrunners, taking Becca Medina (Denver, Colo./Heritage H.S.)'s long pass into the box for a 1-on-1 with a ThunderWolves defender and notching the goal at the 8:59 mark of the game.

Maggie Rojas (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) stretched the lead to 2-0 at 33:35, as her shot from the right corner snuck into the top half of the net.

That score remained until under five minutes left in the game when Kelci Newlin (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) sent a pass into the box. CSUP's goalkeeper was unable to control the ball after sliding in and Price scored her eighth goal of the season, leaping over the goalkeeper to have a wide-open shot.

Jordan Simkins (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.) made five saves for the Roadrunners to earn the shutout. Savannah Thompson stopped 11 shots for the ThunderWolves.

Metro State will host No. 14 Fort Lewis at 1 p.m. on Friday.
