Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. - No. 1 Metro State survived a late rally on the road at Western State Colorado to hold on for a 75-70 win in Gunnison, Colo., on Saturday night. The Roadrunners improved to 17-0 overall and 13-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WSCU fell to 7-10 and 6-7.
The win extended MSU's winning streak to 17 games to start the season, the best start in school history, and third-best overall winning streak.
MSU led by 17 points with eight minutes left and held a comfortable lead for the majority of the game, but a 25-12 run by the Mountaineers over the next seven minutes brought them back within four points with 54 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Jordan Adams.
The Roadrunners hit 5-of-8 at the free throw line and held WSCU to one field goal in the final 45 seconds to hold on for the win.
Metro State did not hit a field goal in the final five minutes of the game.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) scored a season-high 25 points, hitting 7-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-10 at the line.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) scored 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting and made 8-for-8 at the line to go with seven rebounds.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) scored 13 points.
However, the rest of the team combined to shoot 3-for-22 (.136) as MSU shot a season-low 36.2 percent as a team. The Mountaineers converted 53.1 percent, but Metro State dominated the turnover battle 10-to-20 and made 27-of-35 (.771) at the free throw line to overcome its poor shooting night.
The Roadrunners led 37-21 at halftime and had a 21-point lead five minutes into the second half.
Metro State avenged two road losses over the weekend, going 2-0 at Colorado Mesa and WSCU after an 0-2 road trip to those two schools last season.
Joseph Charles led the Mountaineers with 20 points off the bench and Charles Joseph had 18 points, shooting 8-of-8 from the floor.
MSU will continue its four-game road trip on Friday at Chadron State.
