Women's basketball: Wood's career high leads Roadrunners to road win

Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. - Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) scored a career-high 24 points as Metro State earned a 78-61 win at Western State Colorado on Saturday night in Gunnison, Colo. The Roadrunners improved to 12-6 overall and 10-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WSCU fell to 1-16 and 1-12.

Wood connected on her first four shots--all 3-point attempts--and hit 7-of-12 from the floor in the game. She also made 5-of-6 at the line and pulled down three rebounds.

Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) provided 16 points and had six rebounds. Tai Jensen (Troy, Idaho/Troy H.S.) added 12 points and five boards off the bench. Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) scored nine and Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) had eight points and nine rebounds.

A 10-0 run late in the first half helped Metro State take a 38-33 lead at halftime. The Roadrunners allowed WSCU to shoot 42.3 percent in the first half, but a tighter defense in the second limited the Mountaineers to 34.8 percent shooting in the second half. That helped the Roadrunners take control of the game.

Western State stayed in the game for about 10 minutes, but a 9-0 run blew Metro's lead out to 64-48 with 6:52 remaining and the Roadrunners eventually stretched that lead to as many as 20 points.

For the game, MSU shot 41.4 percent from the floor and made 23-of-26 (.885) at the line--one night after attempting a season-low four free throws. The Roadrunners also took care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers and outrebounded WSCU 38-29.

Metro State will continue its four-game road trip on Friday at Chadron State.
