Box Score DENVER - No. 2 Metro State never trailed on Saturday night as it defeated Western New Mexico 92-61. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Mustangs' record to 4-8 and 3-5 in the RMAC.
Metro State was led by a balanced scoring effort as four Roadrunners scored in double figures.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) led the way with 20 points followed by 16 from
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) and 10 from both
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) and
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College).
Morse led the way for the Roadrunners on the boards as he pulled down 15 rebounds.
DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) also had a career night on the backboard as he pulled down a career high seven rebounds.
The game started out fast in Metro State's favor as it started the game off on a 9-4 run. The Roadrunners' high-pressure defense forced 14 turnovers in the first half which helped propel them to a 55-26 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Metro State came out strong again as it went on a 17-6 run to open the half. The Roadrunners continued their strong play as they never led less than 27 point for the rest of the way in route to a 92-61 victory.
Overall for the game Metro State shot 50.3 percent from the field on 36-for-71 shooting.
Western New Mexico was led by Merle Branch with 12 points.
Metro State will be back in action on Friday when they travel across town to Lakewood to take on Colorado Christian at 7 p.m.
