Volleyball: Metro State gets swept at WNMU

Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. - Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason player of the year Angelina Pulu had 13 kills and 18 digs as Western New Mexico swept Metro State 25-22, 25-16, 25-19 in Silver City, N.M., on Saturday evening. The Roadrunners fell to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the RMAC, while WNMU improved to 14-3 and 7-2.

Pulu and the Mustangs were on fire, hitting .342 as a team. Metro State, which entered the match second in the RMAC in blocking, had just one block all night and WNMU took advantage.

The loss overshadowed strong performances from Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) and Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) for MSU Denver. Haun had a team-high 12 kills and added six digs. Quijano, the reigning RMAC offensive player of the week, had 11 kills and hit .323 (11-1-31). Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) added 10 kills. Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) was efficient in the middle, hitting .364, but had just 11 attack attempts and had five kills.

Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) also had an excellent night at the setter position, assisting on 35 kills and helping the team to a .219 hitting percentage.

Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led the defense with 16 digs.

The Mustangs hit .500 in the first set, but cooled into the high .200s for the rest of the night. Despite allowing the Mustangs the excellent offensive set, the Roadrunners hung in and were tied 20-20. WNMU scored five of the final seven points to win the set.

Western New Mexico went on a six-point run to break a 10-10 tie in the second and take control.

In the third set, the Mustangs led from early in the set. MSU Denver fought off match point three times and forced a timeout before the match came to an end.

Metro State returns home on Thursday to host Colorado State-Pueblo at 7 p.m. It will be faculty and staff night as all Metro State faculty and staff will receive free admission.
