Men's Soccer: Roadrunners fall to Colorado Mines 5-3 on Sunday

Box Score DENVER- Metro State fell to No. 22 Colorado Mines on Sunday afternoon 5-3.  The loss dropped the Roadrunners' record to 8-3-3 overall and 6-2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The win increased the Orediggers' record to 9-3-1 overall and 7-3-0 in the RMAC.

Metro State got on the board first as Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.) scored off a free kick in the 21st minute.  The goal was his first of the season.

Colorado Mines answered five minutes later as Joe Haines scored his third goal of the season off the corner kick from Jared Herselman to tie the game at 1-1.

Metro State took a 2-1 advantage when Carlos Mendez (Denver, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) scored on a free kick from 19 yards out.  The goal was Mendez's second goal of the season.

Colorado Mines again answered this time right before halftime as Baski Baker scored his fifth goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

In the first half, the score of the game accurately reflected what was happening on the field as both teams had nine shots each and three shots on goal each.

In the second half, Colorado Mines took the lead when Richard Garvey scored his second goal of the season off a pass from Tesho Akindele in the 58th minute.

Colorado Mines added another goal in the 84th minute to take a 4-2 lead when Haines scored his second goal of the game.  Haines second goal also came off a corner kick from Herselman.

Less than 30 seconds later Andy Lopez (Phoenix/La Joya H.S.) scored his seventh goal of the season to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of the Orediggers. 

Unfortunately for the Roadrunners Akindele scored the clinching goal in the 90th minute to give the Orediggers a 5-3 win.

Overall for the game, Metro State was outshot 19-18.

Metro State will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Pueblo to take on CSU-Pueblo.
