Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. - Top-ranked Metro State cruised to a 65-50 win over West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic in Pueblo, Colo. The Roadrunners improved to 2-0 to start the season, while the Buffaloes fell to 1-2.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) buried 3-of-6 from the outside and had a game-high 20 points.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocked shots for his fifth career double-double.
Jamal McClerkin (Van Nuys, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) chipped in with 10 points.
The Roadrunners controlled the ball, committing just eight turnovers and forcing 17 with the aid of nine steals. They also shot 45.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded WTAMU 34-28.
Metro State closed the first half on a 10-0 run as Jefferson hit a pair of 3-pointers, helping the Roadrunners take a 34-24 lead at the break.
MSU Denver led by double digits for most of the second half and held the Buffs to just 35.3 percent shooting after halftime.
Metro State will play exhibition games on Monday and Tuesday at the NIT Season Tip-Off in Tucson, Ariz. The Roadrunners will face Rhode Island at 6 p.m. on Monday.
Jefferson was named the Al Kaly Shriner's Classic most valuable player and Kay was selected to the five-person all-tournament team.
