Women's basketball: Metro State pulls away for sixth straight win

Box Score DENVER - Metro State outscored Regis University 20-9 over the final 11 minutes to pull away for a 64-49 win at Regis on Saturday afternoon in women's basketball. The Roadrunners improved to 17-6 overall and 15-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with their sixth straight win. The Rangers fell to 9-13 and 8-10.

It was the 10th time this season MSU has held an opponent under 50 points.

Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) poured in 16 points and had four assists and Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) and Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) each had 15, combining for 6-of-9 3-point field goals. Lambrecht also had four assists and Valencia had six rebounds. Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) pulled down nine rebounds and had two steals. Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) scored eight points off the bench.

Both teams battled through a tight first half, but a 9-1 run late in the first half gave MSU a 27-20 lead with 3:22 before the break and the Roadrunners led 32-28 at halftime. Wood led all scorers with nine points and Burke was 4-for-4 for eight points off the bench in six minutes. Metro State shot 58.3 percent in the first half.

Regis never led in the second half, but cut its deficit to one point after a 3-pointer to open the half. MSU pulled back ahead by seven points, but a free throw cut that back to four points at 44-40 with 11:05 left.

The Roadrunners bounced back with a 10-1 run over five minutes for a 54-41 lead with 5:58 left and led by double digits for the final 2:35.

Metro State outrebounded Regis 35-23 and shot 47.1 percent for the game, while holding RU to just 36.0 percent shooting.

Kaitie Vader led the Rangers with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Metro State will travel to Fort Lewis for a 5:30 p.m. game on Friday.
