Men's soccer: Lopez provides late winner for Metro State

WICHITA, Kan. - Andy Lopez (Phoenix/La Joya H.S.) scored with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game as visiting Metro State topped Newman University 1-0 in Wichita, Kan., on Sunday. The Roadrunners improved to 2-1-1 overall, while NU fell to 0-3.

The Roadrunners dominated the game, outshooting the Jets 21-6, but still managed just one goal on 10 shots on frame. NU goalkeeper Steven Hamersky made nine saves.

Lopez finally pushed across the winner at 78:28, heading in a corner kick from Pierce Galan (Phoenix/Seton Catholic H.S.). It was his second goal of the season.

Newcomer Keegan Hand (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley H.S.), who joined the team on Thursday, made three saves to record a shutout in his first career start in goal.

Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) took a team-high eight shots, including three on goal.

Metro State opens Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at home on Friday at 3:30 p.m. against UC-Colorado Springs.
