Women's Soccer: Farley's goal and strong defensive effort give Metro State the victory in the rain

Box Score

DENVER - A strong defensive effort and a lone goal by Brandi Farley (Colorado Springs/Pine Creek H.S.) helped Metro State pull out the 1-0 victory against Emporia State (Kan.) despite the elements.  The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 2-0-2 on the season while the loss dropped the Hornets to 2-3 overall.

The Roadrunners held the Hornets without a shot in the game in the pouring rain at Auraria Field.  The zero shot attempts allowed tied the school record for fewest shots allowed.  It was the sixth time in school history and the first time since 2009 against New Mexico Highlands.

In the first half, the Roadrunners controlled the pace of the game as majority of the time the ball was kept on the Hornets defensive half of the field.  Despite having 17 shots in the first half, Metro State was unable to capitalize on any of its chances as the half ended in a 0-0 tie.

One of the Roadrunners' best scoring opportunities came in the 29th minute when Shelby Stephenson (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.)'s shot hit the corner of the post and crossbar.

In the second half, Metro State continued its control over the game and was finally able to cash in on one of its chances when Farley scored in the 75th minute to give the Roadrunners the go ahead goal.

Overall for the game Metro State outshot Emporia State 30-0 including outshooting the Hornets 10-0 with shots on goal.

Nicole Jablonski (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern H.S.) earned the victory for the Roadrunners while Yadira Rivera picked up the loss despite making nine saves in goal for the Hornets.

Metro State will be back in action on Friday when the Roadrunners host Western State at 1 p.m. in the first game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for both teams.
