Men's basketball: McCarron nears a triple-double in big road win

Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) came up two assists shy of a triple-double as No. 5 Metro State cruised to an 86-55 win at New Mexico Highlands on Friday night. The win improved the Roadrunners to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Cowboys fell to 6-5 and 3-4.

McCarron nearly had the first triple-double for the Roadrunners since 1993, totaling 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. He shot 7-of-12 from the floor.

Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) scored a game-high 20 points, burying 4-of-8 from the outside and 7-of-11 from the floor, while adding five rebounds and four steals. Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) had 18 points and four rebounds. Will Sinclair (Lilydale, Australia/Lilydale Heights College) added nine points.

Metro State held the Cowboys to just 36 percent shooting, while forcing 20 turnovers. At the same time, the Roadrunners shot 46.9 percent and committed just 11 turnovers, while outrebounding NMHU 39-to-35.

MSU Denver never trailed in the game and jumped out to leads of 9-0 and 14-2. The Roadrunners took a 49-30 lead into halftime.

A 7-0 run early in the second half put Metro State in front 56-31 and the Roadrunners controlled the game for the rest of the night.

Stuart Sullivan led Highlands with 16 points off the bench.

Metro State plays at Western New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
