LAKELAND, Fla. - Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) and
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) combined for 42 points and 20 rebounds as No. 3 Metropolitan State University of Denver won 73-53 over Armstrong State (Ga.) on Friday at the Florida Southern Terrace Hotel Classic in Lakeland, Florida. The Roadrunners improved to 5-0 overall, while ASU fell to 2-2.
McCarron had 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting and added eight rebounds and four assists. Kay scored 19 points and pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds for the team's first double-double of the year. He also had two steals and a blocked shot.
Jourdon Hunter (Denver, Colo./Kennedy H.S.) poured in 10 points off the bench, burying a pair of 3-pointers.
Dalante Dunklin (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker H.S.) had eight points and three assists off the bench.
The Roadrunners committed just six turnovers in the game and forced 13, while shooting 49 percent.
Kay had 15 first-half points and McCarron added 14 to lead the Roadrunners to a 37-26 lead at halftime.
MSU Denver led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
The Roadrunners will face No. 6 Florida Southern on Saturday.
