Men's basketball: McCarron's 26 points lead Roadrunners to win to start RMAC play

DENVER - No. 9/6 Metropolitan State University of Denver opened up the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season with an 82-52 victory over Regis University Saturday night at the Auraria Event Center. The victory extends the Roadrunners RMAC regular season winning streak to 24.
 
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) led the way for MSU Denver with 26 points including shooting 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) tallied 14 points and had three assists to go along with seven rebounds. Sam Porter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) and Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) each had seven points and six rebounds and five of Porter's rebounds were on the offensive end. DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) shot 3-for-4 from the floor and scored eight points.
 
McCarron led all scorers in the first half with 19 points including 8-for-8 from the free throw line. MSU Denver pressured the Rangers into committing eight turnovers, while the Roadrunners had 11 offensive rebounds to help MSU Denver jump out to a 41-27 lead at the half.
 
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 61-41 lead midway through the second half, and then with the help of 10 Rangers turnovers help stretch the lead to 82-52. MSU Denver led through the entire game.
 
Brent Hartshorne led the Rangers in scoring with 16 points.
 
MSU Denver takes on the No. 8 UCCS Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
