Women's basketball: Lambrecht and Paine's big shots lead thrilling win

Box Score DENVER - Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) and Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) hit back-to-back 3-pointers with the shot clock expiring in the final two minutes to help Metro State overcome a late three-point deficit for a wild 63-58 win over Black Hills State on Saturday evening at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 9-10 overall and 8-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while BHSU fell to 10-9 and 9-6 in the RMAC.

The Yellow Jackets overcame a 19-point second-half deficit and led Metro State 57-54 with under two minutes to go. Lambrecht then drilled a 35-foot shot as the shot clock expired to tie the game with 1:44 left. The next time down the floor, Paine broke the tie with a 3-pointer from the right wing, again with the shot clock expiring with 48 seconds to play. Lambrecht sunk 3-of-4 at the line in the final minute to seal the win.

Lambrecht finished with a team-high 16 points and had five rebounds and three assists. Fawn Brady (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction H.S.) and Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) each scored 11, while Paine provided nine off the bench. DeGarmo and Paine each hit 3-of-6 from the outside as the Roadrunners connected on 10 3-point field goals. DeGarmo and Elena Velasquez (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia H.S.) each had four steals.

The Roadrunners jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never trailed in the first half, leading by as many as 17 points in the first half. They went into halftime ahead 36-23 behind 6-of-13 shooting from 3-point range and outrebounding the Yellow Jackets 18-to-9. DeGarmo hit 4-of-5 from the floor to lead all scorers with 11 points at the break.

MSU Denver scored the first six points of the second half to lead 42-23 with 17:48 left. But BHSU went on a 24-5 run to tie the game 49-49 with 6:36 remaining. The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the game at 51-50 with 4:58 to play.

The Yellow Jackets built a 57-54 lead with 2:14 left when Lambrecht and Paine came through for the Roadrunners.

Logan Cowan led Black Hills State with 19 points off the bench.

Metro State will play at Colorado Mines on Friday at 6 p.m.
