Men's basketball: Roadrunners knocked off in semifinals on last-second shot

Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. - T.J. White scored a layup with one second left as No. 20 Central Missouri upset No. 1 Metro State 71-69 on Thursday evening in the NCAA Division II semifinals in Evansville, Ind. The Roadrunners ended their season with a 32-2 record, breaking the school record for the best winning percentage in a season at .941. The loss snapped a 29-game winning streak, one win away from tying the school record set in 2003-04. UCM improved to 29-5 and will advance to Saturday's national championship game.

Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College)'s attempt to beat the buzzer hit the front of the rim and then the backboard as he caught Sam Porter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.)'s baseline throw at the top of the key and turned around to his left, getting his shot off before the buzzer sounded.

National player of the year Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) scored a game-high 21 points, tying an Elite Eight tournament record by hitting 12-of-12 at the free throw line. Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) had 17 points, seven rebounds and five steals. McCarron finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, while hitting 11-of-13 at the line.

Metro State shot a season-low 32.2 percent from the floor, but stayed competitive by making 29-of-32 (.906) at the line. The Roadrunners also committed just three turnovers in the game, tying the school record for fewest turnovers in a game set in 2004 against UC-Colorado Springs. The Mules compensated for their 11 turnovers by shooting 46.9 percent.

The Roadrunners dug themselves an eight-point deficit at haltime at 42-34 after a 3-pointer with less than three seconds remaining by UCM.

The Mules built an 11-point lead at 54-43 with 14:11 remaining, but the Roadrunners climbed back to tie the game 62-62 after a 13-4 run with 3:41 to go after a layup by senior Jamal McClerkin (Van Nuys, Calif./Chaminade College Prep).

The game saw three more ties in the final minutes, despite Central Missouri building a four-point lead with 49 seconds left. A pair of free throws by McCarron cut that deficit in half and his two free throws with seven seconds tied the game at 69-69.

However the Mules quickly sprinted up the floor off the made shot and White made a wide-open layup from the right block off Daylen Robinson's pass with exactly one second left.

Charles Hammork led Central Missouri with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Robinson scored 13.

The Roadrunners say goodbye to three seniors in Jefferson, McClerkin and Raul Delgado (Chihuahua, Mexico/Springville (Utah) H.S.). McClerkin had seven points and five rebounds and Delgado finished with three points.
