Volleyball: Roadrunners suffer first loss of the season to No. 10 SMSU

Box Score DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver suffered its first loss of the season on Friday, falling 25-23, 25-23, 25-23 to No. 10 Southwest Minnesota State at the Colorado Premier Challenge. The Roadrunners dropped to 4-1 overall, while SMSU improved to 4-2. MSU Denver will face Florida Southern at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) was on fire for the Roadrunners, connecting on 16 kills and hitting .375. She had 14 kills and hit .542 through the first two sets.

Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) and Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) each had eight kills. Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) led the effective offense, assisting on 42 of the team's kills as MSU Denver hit .228.

Defensively, Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) paced the team with nine digs.

Despite the Roadrunners outhitting SMSU .400-to- .345 in the first set, the Mustangs took the set with the aid of three errors in the final five points.

MSU Denver led 19-16 in the second, but several late errors again cost the Roadrunners and SMSU took advantage.

The Mustangs went on a seven-point run to overcome an 11-8 deficit in the third. The Roadrunners battled back to net the score at 19-19 and it remained tied at 23-23. An MSU Denver attack error and Mustangs service ace ended the match.
