Box Score DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver swept No. 5 Central Missouri 25-16, 25-12, 25-17 on Saturday evening in its final match of the Colorado Premier Challenge. The Roadrunners improved to 6-2 with the win and finished the tournament 2-2. UCM fell to 3-5, dropping all four of its matches over the weekend.
It was MSU Denver's first sweep over a top-five opponent since beating No. 3 Truman State 3-0 in 2003.
The Roadrunners dominated at the net, finishing with seven blocks and holding the Jennies to a minus-.008 hitting percentage with 22 kills and 23 errors on 119 attempts.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) led the team with four total blocks and
Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) had three block assists.
Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) dug up 17 attacks and
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) had 11 digs with
Summer Greager (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian H.S.) adding 10.
Offensively,
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had a strong match, leading the team with 13 kills. She also added nine digs on defense.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.), who was named to the all-tournament team, had nine kills and a .381 hitting percentage.
Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) had six kills and hit .500, playing in only one set. Greager had five kills.
MSU Denver used a seven-point run to overcome an 11-10 deficit in the first set and never looked back. The Roadrunners jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the second set and a 17-10 lead in the third.
The Roadrunners open up conference play on Thursday at New Mexico Highlands.
