Volleyball: Balanced attack moves Roadrunners to 4-0 this season

Box Score SAN DIEGO - Metropolitan State University of Denver improved to 4-0 for the ninth time in the school's 47-year history of volleyball, defeating Fresno Pacific 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19 on Saturday evening at the Seaside Invitational in San Diego. FPU dropped to 3-1 this season.

It was a balanced offensive attack for MSU Denver as four players reached double digits in kills thanks to setter Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.)'s 50 assists. Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 16 kills. Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) and Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) each connected for 13 kills and Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) added 10. Haun also had five service aces to match a career high, while Hoagland hit .435 and had six blocks. Julia Dorsey (Auburn, Calif./Placer H.S.) also had five kills in three sets of action off the bench.

Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) led another strong defensive effort with 15 digs and Torr had 11.

MSU Denver hit .333 in the first set, but cooled to just .086 in the second set as the match was even at 1-1 after two.

The defense strengthened in the third set, limiting the Sunbirds to just a .091 attack percentage. The Roadrunners jumped out to a 12-7 lead and held on for the win.

Trailing 14-11 in the fourth set, MSU Denver used a 13-3 scoring run to hold match point at 24-17. Haun served a six-point run during that span.

The Roadrunners will co-host the Colorado Premier Challenge next weekend with Regis University. For complete information on match times and opponents, visit www.gometrostate.com/2014premier.
